Yazd is a city that is surrounded by desert. You may drive for hours through a desert before you, suddenly come up on a town with endless avenues. Yazd is built of cob and clay, but everything is very carefully maintained; even the smallest streets are stone-flagged. The houses are surmounted by high turrets with openings oriented toward the dominant winds; they insure the ventilation of the lower parts of the house rather like air-vents on a ship.
