Rasht

(Provincal Capital)

(A plain of tulips in Rasht)

Rasht lies about 15 miles (24 km) south of the Caspian Sea on a branch of the Sefid Rud (white River) . Rasht receives at least 1000 mm precipitation annually and is surrounded by rice fields and areas of half-cleared jungle. Rasht can be divided into the modern and the old sections. The modern part of the city much looks like European cities. In the old part of the city, the mostly two storied houses have much woodwork, such as broad verandas and overhanging eaves; roofs are red tiled, and the houses often are raised from the ground.
